St. Helena sponsors Boy Scout Troop 65, which was founded in 1951 and Girls' Scout Troop 650, which was founded in 2020..  The scouts meet every Saturday from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria.

We also sponsor Cub Scout Pack 65, which also meets every Saturday in the cafeteria

Two cub scouts, four Webelos, and a boy scout from St. Helena Cub Scout Pack 65 and Boy Scout Troop 65 received Catholic Scouting Religious Awards at a special ceremony which took place during the 10AM Mass on October 11 at St. Helena.

**Parents must hold and administer any medications that the Scout needs to take. This includes asthma pumps and Epipens.


Cub Scout Six Essentials.

Always bring:

• A first-aid kit. You can build your own first-aid kit or buy a small kit. It should not cost more than $7.00.
• Water. It can prevent you from facing dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
• A small flashlight. You need this to find your way in the dark (and make sure it has fresh batteries).
• Trail food. You’ll be glad you have fuel to maintain your energy. (The Pack will provide)
• Sun protection/insect repellent. This might include (depending on the season); sunblock with insect repellent, sunglasses, and a brimmed hat. 
• A whistle. Blow the whistle 3X to call for help only if you are lost or injured. 

• Rain gear/poncho. Being wet from rain mat result in hypothermia, a potentially fatal condition.
• A map and compass are probably the most important tools you can carry if you get lost! (The Pack will provide)

Greater New York Councils – In-Person Scouting Activity Guidance
Units in the Greater New York Councils must follow the 2020 - 06-10 - GNYC Guidelines to Restart Scouting Safely that has four steps for restart. The Restart Scouting Safely
Planning Guide can be used to develop the Unit’s Restart Scouting Safely Plan.

• Step 1: Develop your Scout unit’s COVID-19 ‘Restart Scouting Safely’ plan with your unit committee.
• Step 2: Share your plan with your Scout unit’s Charter Organization and Scouting Professional. Discuss other requirements and guidelines the Charter Organization may have in place, and if your Scout unit has permission to begin using their facilities/space for meetings.
• Step 3: Communicate your unit’s plan to your Scouting families. Be sensitive to all families and consider offering a hybrid (both in-person and virtual) program to ensure all Scouts can participate. Parents should only resume Scouting when they are comfortable. Parents are highly encouraged to ask their unit leadership questions about the unit’s plan to restart Scouting safely, and a unit should ONLY begin meeting if social distancing can be assured.
• Step 4: Monitor and adjust your unit’s plan to be current with any new council, local, state, or federal changes. Repeat steps 1-3 when changes are made.

 
Activity Categories

The decision to allow activities or not allow activities, as well as the guidelines found in the ‘Restart Scouting Safely’ are based on current legal and public health allowances for organizations in the state of New York. The guidelines may become less restrictive or more restrictive based on government mandate. While we would love for Scouting to return to how things were before the pandemic, the return is not under our direct control.

No activities should resume in person until the unit has a reviewed Restarting Scouting Safely Plan.

 NY Diocese Shut down all School and Youth Ministry Programs from March 14-23. For the safety of our Cub Family, all Pack activities are canceled until April 4.

Search and Rescue was one of the many topics covered at last Saturday's Bronx River District Boy Scout Merit Badge Rally and Cub Scout Belt-loop Bonanza, which was held at St. Helena Catholic Church. The cubs learned about the role and importance of search and rescue dogs.

Boy Scout Troop 65 went to the Mitsubishi Riverwalk this weekend.


Cub Pack 65 will next meet on Saturday, October 19 from 10AM-NOON in the Calasanz Room, located between the two restrooms.

St. Helena Boy Scout Troop 65 held an Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Wednesday to honor the troop's 59th, Orlando Palapa (right) and 60th, Ian Pichardo (far left) eagle scouts. A reception followed the induction. Six other eagle scouts were also present for the ceremony.

Looking for Women to Head Girl's Scout Troop or Pack 65
Boy Scouts of America has officially launched their Scouts BSA program, offering girls ages 11 to 17 years old the opportunity to join all-girl troops. The parent organization name will remain the Boy Scouts of America and the Cub Scouts program will keep its title as well.  Scouts BSA and Boy Scout troops will have common characteristics, but they will remain separate and will not be co-ed units, according to a release.  To maintain the benefits of a single-gender scouting model, each separate troop will have their own Scoutmaster, patrols, and youth leadership tracks. Troops will share some resources for families for the sake of convenience, but they are in fact separate troops, according to BSA officials. The new girl's scout handbook, which came out last week is the exact same handbook; it's just changed to where you see girls in the pictures. St. Helena has had a traditional Girl Scout Troop in the past and has had an active Boy Scout Troop for 66 years.  We are now looking to see if there is any interest in forming a girl's Scouts BSA troop or pact.  To do so, we need females over the age of 21 who would be interested in being trained as leaders.  If you are interested, please call the rectory at 718-892-3232 and leave your contact information.

 5th Annual Community Board Nine Recognition Dinner

 Father David Powers, Sch.P. and the three most recent Eagle Scouts from St. Helena's Boy Scout Troop 65 (L - R) Orlando Palapa, LaVar Hinkson, and Donald Hartnett, were recognized at the Fifth Annual Community Board Nine Appreciation Dinner. CB Nine is the largest community board in the Bronx, serving 200,000 people.

 Pennies for the Pantry:  St. Helena Boy Scout Troop 65 is sponsoring Pennies for the Pantry after the Masses on Sunday, December 10.  Scouts will be at the back of the church collecting all your loose change.  The proceeds will be used to buy food for needy parishioners during the Christmas season.

St. Helena Boy Scout Troop 65 received a community service award at the 4th Annual Bronx Community Board Nine Recognition Awards Dinner, which took place on Friday, September 8 at the YMCA on Castle Hill Drive.


 90th Anniversary of Ten Mile River Scout Camp at Keowa,  some scouts from St. Helena Troop 65  attended this special anniversary summer camp.



 Papal Nuncio addresses Scouts at National Jamboree:  "The Holy Father is asking you, the Scouts, to be vigilant -- to look out for your brothers and sisters and to be patient," said Archbishop Christophe Pierre, the papal nuncio to the United States, in his homily during a Mass July 23 at the Boy Scouts of America National Jamboree. "The important thing is to persevere, to not give up in your mission and to not give up on others, hoping that they might have new life." Archbishop Pierre ended his speech with the Scout Prayer, a prayer for generosity.

 Boy Scout Donald Hartnett's Eagle Scout Project was to build a Shrine to St. Anne, which is located at the intersection of Westchester Ave. and Olmstead Ave.


 EAGLE SCOUT BOOK DRIVE

An Eagle Scout candidate, Levar Hinkson (center), from St. Helena Boy Scout Troop 65 conducted a BOOK DRIVE.  The children’s books were distributed by the scouts to children at the KWANZAA celebration which took place in the gym on Friday, December 30.  The adult books were brought by the scouts to two facilities run by Catholic Charities here in the Bronx which offer residential, assisted living, and senior day care programs.



St. Helena Boy Scout Troop 65 attended the monthly 43rd Precinct Community Council Meeting as one of the requirements in earning the Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge.
